CleanBG vs remove.bg vs Canva: which background remover to use in 2026
A side-by-side of in-browser CleanBG, remove.bg, and Canva after the 1 December 2026 shutdown — privacy, cost, hair quality, batch work, and APIs.
remove.bg made one-click cutouts ordinary. Canva now owns that product and is folding the standalone site into its editor on 1 December 2026. If you just need a subject on a transparent PNG, you suddenly have three different shapes of tool: a design suite, a soon-to-close cloud API, and a page that never sees your file.

Privacy
Cloud removers have to receive the pixels. That is fine for a public product shot. It is a poor default for family photos, ID scans, unreleased packaging, or client work under NDA.
CleanBG has no upload endpoint. The Network tab during a cutout should show the model download (once per device) and nothing that looks like your JPEG leaving. After the weights are cached you can disconnect and keep working. Details: a no-upload background remover.
Canva's remover lives inside a document that is stored on Canva's account. That is a different product, not a drop-in privacy replacement for remove.bg's "upload, download, close the tab" habit.
Quality and hair
remove.bg set the consumer bar for hair and fur. CleanBG's Quality mode runs a second, zoomed pass on the subject and then a guided-filter matte at full resolution, which is the same job those cloud models do — on your GPU when WebGPU is available, otherwise on a lighter CPU model.
Expect:
- People, pets, and solid products: close for most photos.
- Fine flyaways: Quality mode helps; a cheap phone on WASM will be slower and a bit softer.
- Glass, smoke, fishing line: every automatic matte still guesses. None of the three is a VFX plate tool.
If hair is the whole job and you already pay for Canva Pro, staying in Canva is reasonable. If you want the cutout without an editor around it, a local tool is less friction.
Speed and devices
Desktop Chrome or Edge with a recent GPU: about a second or two per image after the model is warm. Safari, Firefox, and phones fall back to WebAssembly. That is slower, still local, and still free.
remove.bg and Canva feel instant when the network is good because a datacenter GPU is already hot. They feel like nothing when you are offline, on a plane, or blocked from uploading.
Batch, formats, and the API hole
CleanBG accepts JPEG, PNG, WebP, and HEIC (decoded in the tab), queues several files, and can zip the results. There is no server-side batch API, and there will not be: an API would be an upload endpoint.
remove.bg's self-serve API is being pointed at Leonardo.Ai, with a different auth scheme and payload. Enterprise contracts continue. If your pipeline is POST image → PNG, budget a rewrite; a browser tool will not replace that.
Canva is a design surface. Exporting fifty transparent PNGs is possible; it is not what the editor is for.
Who should pick what
- Already in Canva, laying out a post. Use Canva's remover. Switching tools to get a PNG you then re-upload is wasted motion.
- Have leftover remove.bg credits. Spend them before 1 December 2026. After that date they are gone.
- Need an API. Leonardo.Ai or another cloud matting API. CleanBG is the wrong shape.
- Need the file to stay on the device, or you are tired of credits. Use CleanBG.
The remaining work on our side is the same as any local model: better hair on small subjects, and a lighter first download on slow networks. The privacy contract does not change.
